The kitchen has always been an essential part of my home and even more so since I have been living with Flo (more than 10 years ...). We love to cook. We do not cook the same thing, we are complementary in this regard. And we have one thing in common, we can spend hours cooking. Flo is a real enthusiast. Me, I like to cook when I'm not completely exhausted. We never had very large kitchens. We have often had a bad time. We also had small spaces that were more or less well organized. And I'm sure I'm not the only one who likes to cook without having the space, the dream space to do so. But how to decorate and furnish a small kitchen? I will try to answer this question in the rest of this article.
THE RIGHT BALANCE BETWEEN STORAGE AND APPLIANCES
Knowing what's essential in your kitchen isn't the only issue in a small space. You also have to think about storage and appliances. In a small space, the common mistake is to want to favour one over the other. Having too much storage or too many appliances will not make your kitchen more functional. On the contrary. Wanting a big classic oven in a small kitchen is not impossible. But you have to be careful that it does not burden you more than necessary. The same goes for the fridge. Do you need a family fridge when you live alone and don't cook every day? Couldn't this place be more functional?
APPLIANCES IN A SMALL KITCHEN
Choosing between integrated appliances and one that is not is also an interesting question when you rethink the layout of your kitchen. Integrated appliances are often a little more expensive but they save space. We think for example of the oven or the fridge. On the other hand, it should not remove all your storage. (Putting the dishes in the oven is not the idea of the century, eh!) Coming back to our personal experience, we had made an original choice in our kitchen. We had chosen not to have a hob integrated into the worktop, but we had two dominoes that we could move as we liked. The 4 or even 5 burners were not useful to us and as I said above, we often needed to adjust our work plan according to our needs. Dominoes allowed us to shape spaces according to our needs. And when we didn't need to cook, they were put away in one of the pieces of furniture, which left a free, clean and tidy space. More minimalist.
STORAGE IN A SMALL KITCHEN
To know your storage needs, there's nothing like a good inventory. Do you have many pots and pans? If so, a casserole will come in handy. If not, it is not necessary to encumber you with this type of storage. Do you have a lot of dishes to put away? Yes? Crockery can easily find its place in a small kitchen in wall storage. Working height in a small space is necessary. The angles should not be neglected either.
EASILY DECORATE A SMALL KITCHEN
In a kitchen, I have already had the opportunity to tell you about it, the decoration is different since it is a fatter and more humid room than the living room or a bedroom for example. The decoration, therefore, does not have the same treatment. And in a small space, it doesn't have to be bulky. Even though the decorating process in a small kitchen is different than in a larger space, that doesn't mean it has to be non-existent.
THE KITCHEN FLOOR
If you are in a complete small kitchen remodel project, you are probably going to change the floor in your room. And there, nothing forces you to create a beige or grey tiled floor. You can have fun with more original tile patterns. I have already had the opportunity on several occasions to deal with the subject. We can think of cement tiles that are both old-fashioned and trendy. You can also start with more original tiles such as tortoiseshell tiles or hexagonal tiles. (I put the links at the bottom of the article for more ideas around the kitchen tiling!)
PLAY WITH THE DECORATIONS OF YOUR KITCHEN FURNITURE
You don't have to choose furniture with the same front for your entire kitchen. A kitchen that is too uniform can create a block effect that is too visually imposing and oppressive. This is not the goal in a small space. And so to break this one-piece effect, we can imagine creating a two-tone kitchen. A wood tone for low furniture. A neutral tone for wall furniture. We can also imagine breaking the monotony of a white kitchen, with one or two coloured furniture fronts, in a bright and warm shade.
