History of Architecture

The first surviving written work on the subject of architecture is De architecture, by the Roman architect Vitruvius in the early first century AD. Vitruvius says that the architect should strive to fulfil the three most important attributes- durability, utility and beauty.

In the early 19th century, Augustus Welby Northmore Pugin wrote Contrasts the modern, industrial world, which he disparaged, with an ideal layout of the neo-medieval world.

In the late 19th century, Louis Sullivan, an architect of skyscrapers, promoted an overriding precept to architectural design. In the last 20th century, a new concept, the consideration of sustainability was added to the compass of structure and function.
